navigate the U.S. immigration system her entire childhood. Filing paperwork, studying for the
citizenship test, waiting, hoping, all while trying to raise a family in a new country, they were able
to achieve their goal, but KyuIn never lost sight of the hardships she witnessed her family go
through. This personal, direct experience led her to develop a strong passion in studying law. Raised
in southern Georgia and spending her teens in southern California, KyuIn came of age in diverse
immigrant and multi-cultural communities. She witnessed families’ troubles with the fear of
deportation, language barriers, and bureaucratic confusion kept neighbors from accessing basic rights.
At the same time, her family extends beyond South Korea. Having Korean-Guatemalan relatives in
Guatemala taught her that immigration is shared across the globe. Such experiences drive her
commitment and passion to help keep the law precise and just. KyuIn is a double major in Law, Public
Policy, and Society, and in Religious Studies, and intends to transfer to the University of Chicago
upon completing her two associates. Her academic work is rooted in questions of justice, belonging,
